Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to present my program, “Please Help Me With My Homework,” to a group of parents and students in Chester, NH. The Chester Academy Parent Support group invited me to talk to parents and students about simple strategies for memorizing facts, keeping homework fun, and organizing assignments to make them manageable.

During the program, we were talking about mnemonics when a young girl, Katie H. raised her hand with a great example of a memory strategy that her aunt taught her. Katy explained that, when she was trying to learn how to spell “because” she was having a hard time remembering the right spelling. So, her aunt taught her the mnemonic, “big elephants can’t always understand small elephants.” After that, she always remembered how to spell because. This is an awesome example of family helping their children learn as well as a great mnemonic to share with you.

I had so much fun presenting this workshop. The parents and children were active participants and the 90 minutes flew by so quickly.

What memorable mnemonics do you use to remember things or to help your student remember important material?
