Martial Arts for Peace

Honesty, Cooperation and Consensus in my Martial Arts Class

Students in my Martial Arts for Peace class earn stickers at the end of each class for performance, effort, and fellowship. Usually, they get one per class. If they’ve offered fellowship and I catch it, they get a bonus sticker. They’ll sometimes earn a bonus for going above and beyond or evidence that they’ve practiced at home. They each have a sticker chart for the stickers. When the chart is full, they get to trade in the chart for any activity they choose during the next class. It takes a long time to fill the chart because class is only once per week.

Last night, one of the students claimed her prize. She asked to play dodge ball. The other students were very proud to admit that the prior week they noticed her chart was almost full so they ALL put their stickers on HER chart so that they would get to play dodge ball this week! That’s ingenious. They were honest about what they did, they cooperated to accomplish the goal and they reached the decision about what the prize was by consensus.

I’m still chuckling. I love it.
