Working with others, whether it is with parents or siblings at home, or another student in the classroom, can be a great way to help students study and learn information.

One way for students to study together is to take turns teaching the information to each other:

  • Have students find a partner to study with.
  • Set a timer for 1-2 minutes
  • Tell one student to teach the other one thing from the homework, what they learned in lecture today, etc.
  • Reset the timer for 1-2 minutes.
  • The next student then teaches one thing from the homework, class work, etc. (Something different from what the first student taught.)
  • Repeat.

Teaching someone else is an excellent way of reviewing material. Since two people don’t always understand information in the same way, teaching each other requires students to rephrase or use creative examples in order to explain a conflict.  This forces the brain to rework and rethink what it already knows, therefore reinforcing it.
